It's all immigration reform today.
La Jornada, Mexico. "Mutual Accusations for the failure of the Senate plan". This is just a translation of the wire coverage, where Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress blame Harry Reid for not letting them gut the bill in conference, and Reid responds by pointing out how little credibility Bush has.
El Universal, Mexico. "Bush returns fire for the guest worker plan fiasco". El Universal does there own reporting here, and mistakenly claims Reid is the Senate majority leader. The article points out that Republicans twice tried to gut the bill, as the McCain-Kennedy bill became the Specter-Kennedy bill became the Hagel-Martinez bill, and that the amendment Republicans wanted to offer would have eliminated the guest-worker program. The article again restates the needless cruelty of the Sensenbrenner bill.
El Universal, Mexico. "NYC black community supports the 'day without immigrants'". By the way, May 1 is going to be a general strike. The article restates the tragedy of Anthony Soltero, who was improperly threatened with jail time for participating in protests. (more news here).
Frontera, Tijuana, Mexico. "A blow to the refuge of illegals in the US". By 49-16 (in a committee vote?), the House approved an amendment to withhold federal funds from municipalities that refuse to arrest undocmented immigrants. Let me say that this is all insane, and that there is a reason why we restrict immigration enforcement to CIS/INS - We don't want immigrants to be afraid to report violent crime to the police.
